Yes. Students K-8 who live in Washington, D.C. can take advantage of Friendship’s online schooling options.

Charter schools are tuition-free public schools that are open to all students. They are independently operated schools that run with more flexibility than traditional public schools in exchange for increased accountability.

Yes. Like all public schools, charter schools are held to state and federal academic standards. They must also be open to all students, including those with disabilities, funded primarily through federal, state, and local tax dollars, and are not affiliated with or restricted to a particular religious group.

The “charter” is a contract that details the school’s mission, program plans, performance goals, and methods of assessment. Every public charter school has an “authorizer” (i.e. a district school board, university, Mayor’s office, non-profit organization, etc) who holds the school accountable for meeting the goals in their “charter.”

We started with two locations in 1998. Today, Friendship is one of D.C.’s top charter systems with 16 campuses, including online, for students in grades Pre-K3 to 12. Read more about Friendship’s history here.
